Department of Labor orders furniture store to pay worker back wages over COVID-19

LAGRANGE, Ga. — The Department of Labor has ordered an Ashley Homestore in LaGrange to pay back two weeks of paid sick leave to one of its employees after they tested positive for COVID-19.

The department found that the store had violated the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act provisions of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, requiring employers to pay eligible workers two weeks of sick time if they test positive for the virus.

“The FFCRA provides vital relief for both workers and employers. We encourage everyone to use the tools and information we provide to learn about the benefits and protections available under this new law. Anyone with questions is encouraged to call us directly to speak with a trained professional to have those questions answered,” said Wage and Hour Regional Administrator Juan Coria.

The store had to pay the employee $1,040 in wages.
